Fresh Fish! 6 New Ways to Style a Fishtail Braid

By now, most of you have probably figured out how to create your standard fishtail braid. The process is actually quite simple, though repetitive, and anyone with two hands and medium length or longer hair can pull it off.

One of our favorite looks is a fishtail braid off to the side, typically paired with a cute scarf or headband to tie everything together. As is the case with anything you do over and over and over again, we’ve grown a little bored with our off-to-the-side fishtail braid and have vowed to venture into new territory using the same braid.

Check out these six new ways to style a fishtail braid that put a spin on the regular.

Double Fishtail Plaits

This look is so perfect for a million different settings. We can see it with a baseball cap, beanie or cozy winter hat during the chilly months, or styled with pretty gemstones, headbands or flower crowns. The tutorial is from RockMyWedding.co.ukand is essentially two fishtails braided as pigtails. The stylist offers some tips along the way to get that dreamy, whimsical effect.

Low Fishtail Crown Braid

This fishtail crown braid by Tey Li Ting at the blog Circle And Hemisphere is so, so pretty! She calls it a crown braid, but we wouldn’t quite qualify it as such. It’s essentially two fishtail “pigtail” braids that are wrapped into each other at the nape of your neck. The end result makes you look twice. In fact, it takes on a completely different vibe from your regular fishtail braid.

Tri-Fishtail Braid

This one’s more time consuming and requires longer hair to get the full effect, but it can totally be done. YouTube user BeautyKlove walks you through the steps. You start by dividing hair into three even sections and then create a fishtail braid on each section. From there, you braid your three fishtail braids into one regular braid and secure with an elastic.

Quarter Fishtail Pony

There’s something about the simplicity of this fishtail pony tail that we can’t help but be drawn to. The look is detailed by Melanie Lim at Fashionising.com and was inspired by Australian accessory brand Mimco’s runway look at the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. All you need to do is gather your hair into a pony tail, fishtail braid about 1/4 to 1/3 of your ponytail and then secure. Make sure you wrap a section of your hair around the top of the ponytail and where the fishtail braid ends to get a polished look.

Messy Fishtail Bun

Messy can sometimes be good, as in the case of this messy fishtail bun by bloggerKristen at Taming Rapunzel. While this updo is ideal for longer hair, you can always add faux extensions to achieve the same sort of thickness Kirsten gets here. The tutorial is detailed on her blog, so check it out!

Fishtail Braid for Short Hair

Shorties tend to get the shaft when it comes to braids, but it doesn’t have to be that way. This incredibly helpful and straightforward tutorial by a Howcast stylist teaches you how to get a pretty fishtail braid even with chin-length hair. There are two parts to the video, so make sure you watch part two, which shows you how to sort of expand the braid and give it more body.
